Building capability, confidence and capital

Our vision is a world where women have equal opportunities and the capability, confidence and capital necessary to establish and grow businesses, resulting in a brighter future for the women themselves and their communities as a whole.

Women who are financially independent have greater control over their own and their children’s lives. Economic security gives women a more influential voice in tackling injustice and discrimination in their communities and wider society.

Yet women entrepreneurs around the world still lack the business skills, technology, networks and access to capital they need to be successful in the long term. The Foundation provides support in these four key areas so that women can grow their businesses and create employment opportunities.

Working in partnership with organisations on the ground, the Foundation develops programmes that build confidence, capability and capital in women. Given that women tend to invest 90% of their income back into their families, investing in women isn’t just good ethics, it’s sound economics.

Based in London with a global reach, the Foundation is run by a dedicated team overseen by a board of trustees.

The charity was set up in 2008 in response to Cherie’s experiences meeting women around the world and the realisation that, with the right support, women can overcome the challenges they face and play an important part in the economies and societies in which they work and live.

Fostering role models for future generations

Our mission is to provide women with the skills, technology, networks and access to capital that they need to become successful small and growing business owners, so that they can contribute to their economies and have a stronger voice in their societies.

Working in partnership with non-profit, private and public sector organisations, we develop projects with sustainable solutions to the challenges women entrepreneurs face through three programmes:

We help fill the gap in the economy known as the ‘missing middle’ – small and growing businesses. The women we work with have the potential to take the next step towards becoming successful entrepreneurs or are running small businesses that have already had some success but are struggling to sustain their position or expand. By focusing on the women who have already achieved a level of success, we’re helping women to create employment opportunities and contribute to their economies.

Working with partners

We work together with organisations on the ground, jointly developing projects to help women start and expand their businesses. We provide women entrepreneurs around the world with business skills, technology, network opportunities and access to capital.

We do not accept unsolicited grant applications. Instead, we work together with our partners to develop projects in line with our mission statement. We work within a global community of organisations aiming to economically empower women and we welcome new knowledge partners. Find out how you can get involved.

We work in developing and emerging markets around the world where women have made strides in education and have the potential to succeed in business but lack the necessary support.
