Nyanza Women's Economic Empowerment
The Cherie Blair Foundation and CARE International have joined forces to train 5,000 women entrepreneurs in business skills and connect at least 15% to formal financial services using the mobile phone.
The goal: for the women to scale up their businesses from the micro level to the small and medium enterprise level so they can become financially independent and provide an improved quality of life for their families.
The women entrepreneurs involved are based in Nyanza Province, and their entrepreneurial activities vary from fishing, horticulture and manufacturing to service retail and wholesale.
The business skills training provided incorporates selection of income generating activity, marketing, profitability analysis, business planning and steps in business initiation and diversification.

Helping women expand their businesses so they can give back to their families
Through expanding their businesses, women will be better able to provide food and education for their families as well as gain a wide range of skills helping them to manage resources and increase their financial independence. Ultimately, this project will serve as a model to be replicated across Kenya and the region.
Fitting into the bigger picture
The project is embedded within the Foundation’s larger mobile phone programme, “Women Entrepreneurs and Mobile Technology” which aims to connect women with mobile phones, and CARE’s “Access Africa” programme, a 10 year investment which aims to lift 30 million people out of poverty and help transform their futures.
